DANCING FOR THE PHILIPPINES - CHARITY EVENT - November 23rd 2013

DANCING FOR THE PHILIPPINES - CHARITY EVENT  - November 23rd 2013

About a week and a half ago Lin sat all of us YEPers down and wanted to talk to us.
She talked to us about what was happening in the Philippines and how much it had effected her.
It really hit her hard, and she asked us if we were willing to help her do something to raise money for the people over there who suffer so much more than many of us can even imagine.
That´s how we decided to organize a Dance Workshop Day with lots of classes with lots of different teachers and styles, and with all the money going towards the victims of the Typhoon in the Philippines.

In little over a week we managed to put something amazing together.
We reached out to other schools in and around Malmö, and received a great response from them.

People volunteered to teach and we ended up with 11 teachers and 12 unique dance classes.
We had a lot of help from Malmö Dans Akademi who also offered that we could use their studio since they have two rooms.

So Saturday the 23rd of November dancers from all over southern Sweden came together for the first time to raise money for a higher cause.

From 12:00-18:00 we had around 200 students attending classes and contributing with donations.

Not only did we raise a lot of money for people in great need but we also did it while doing something that we love and at the same time uniting people from different schools and with different backgrounds.

Me who is from here and have been a part of this dance community for a while now can say that this really was a big deal.

We raised around 18 000 kr this day but the donations arent over yet.

We have another charity event coming up December 8th of December where we will again raise money for the same cause.

And you are also able t constantly raise money through this UNICEF link:

UNICEF - RAISING MONEY FOR THE PHILIPPINES

Skånes dance community is uniting and working together to help people less fortunate than ourselves.
I cant express how happy I am to have been a part of this amazing event, and how thankful I am to everyone willing to help out and make this possible.

Special thanks to all the teachers who volunteered and took their time to come and be a part of this event.
And a big thank you to Bella Malekian who helped us organize this and also provided us with her studio.
And then of course our dance mom Lin with her beautiful heart who was the founder of this whole project.
Without her this never would have happened!

Today I am proud to be a dancer, a part of this amazing community and also proud to be a 1YEPer

Day 58 - November 27th 2013 (By Anton Swerkström)

Vad händer och fötter blog!?
(Swedish phrase of the day, if you arent from Sweden that wont make any sense even with goodle translate, oh well sorry guys  :-)

Second day with Sara today and I´m really happy she is teaching us in this education.
You can really tell she is used to teaching and especially teaching an education since she has her own in Denmark.
You can check out her education here:

Just the way she right away learned everyone's names and constantly giving us personal feedback is awesome.
First we had floor barre which I guess went a little better than Monday, but we still have a lot to learn.

Dont know how many times we heard the words “sit bones” but it was a lot.
And every time it was because we didnt use them correctly...
If you dont know floor barre I think you should look it up, and then I can guarantee its harder than it seems.
We were all walking kinda funny afterwards but I guess thats what it does to you, in a good way though... I think...
No just kidding, it really makes you aware of your body and muscles you normally dont use.

Then we had some modern/contemporary technique after that.
And Sara doesnt mess around, she pushes us to the limit, literally.
Also in a good way though!
Even though its tough and sometimes really hard I know we will benefit from this.

After lunch we had Michel from Denmark for the first time in the education.
Michel was just announced as the representative from Denmark for next years Summer Drop, if you dont know him you should definitely check him out!

                  MICHEL SIAN

He taught this up beat choreo with a lot of focus on footwork.
As we started he taught us really fast and really pushed us physically and mentally as well with the amount of 8 counts he showed.
I was sure this was one of Lins schemes to push us with picking up choreo.
I even shared a look with her where she seemed extra devious.
Turns out I was wrong though, Michel just decided to push us since we are a part of this education.
And Im glad he did :-)

We learned the whole thing in around 30 min I think and just went full out over and over.
We were all gasping for air and soaked in sweat, think my t-shirt was the worst since it changed color entirely during the class.

Thats all from me for this time!
Ses!

Day 56 - November 25th 2013 Best Monday Ever (by Mantas Rimeikis)

Day 56 - November 25th 2013  Best Monday Ever (by Mantas Rimeikis)

Hi!

We started our Monday with Sara Gaardbo from Denmark, and she taught us some Floor Barre ( it’s a workout in which body moves through patterns common in ballet and other movement disciplines but laying on the floor, it helps to increase awareness of when & which muscles are used and helps to prevent injuries ) – THAT EXPLANATION hahah
It is actually working and after one and a half hour of doing it you become aware of most of your muscle groups.

!!! And something amazing happened after the break !!!

Lin surprised us in the best way possible , she brought JEKA JANE , I know right?!
After the break Lin asked us to gather at The Hip Drop wall because she wants to post a video on instagram with us screaming 1YEP & after we shouted 3rd time Jeka came in , the reactions were priceless
Elin started screaming , shaking and crying , others grab their heads I just had to sit down saying ‘’oh my god’’

You can see the reaction here

https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10153517159650453&set=vb.541385452&type=2&theater

It came out of nowhere because we currently have a modern teacher + preparation for the X-Mas show.

We had a song to calm down and stretch, everyone couldn’t stop smiling.
Jeka taught us two super cool pieces and everyone gave 200% of energy even though floor barre was physically demanding too.

It’s just insane how much Lin & K cares about us and tries to make us even happier than we usually are ( c’mon we live the dance dream ).
We kinda know the list of the teachers that will come through the year, but Lin still do not reveal most of the stuff that she planned for us, especially in 2014 .

Bye

Day 55 - November 22nd 2013 (By Cecilia Tram)

Hey!

Wow my body hurt like "piiiiip"   :-/

I have never been this strong before, but I have never felt this weak and tired either.
I'm about to fall to sleep right now but the really funny thing is that I can get my legs higher and hold them higher then before and I'm not training ballet.

Wonderful :-)

We had a second class with Toniah today.

She seems to be a real sweetie.
She is very quiet when she talks and explain.
She sang sometimes and she had a smile that made you go "auw"

The choreo felt so much better today.

It felt so good in my body and I felt confident doing it.
She began the class with just grooving and it was so much fun.
Just to start out with that made me feel relaxed and that is something I would like to have more of in the classes.
We did something similar with Andye, but the difference was that someone from the class led the group and we changed the leader so everybody had to lead.
It's a good exercise.
I'm so looking forward to have her again and I'm so looking forward to have Sara Gaardbo in contemporary.

Love to you all.

Day 54 - November 22nd 2013 (By Marilena Maouni)

#Week 10 #Day... I-lost-counting-but-it-was-this-Thursday
Our schedule for today said: Warm Up extended version. Why Lin is calling it “warm up” no one knows.
From what I know warm up is up to 15 or 20 minutes tops.
Doing crunches, push ups, grooves, isolations, butt exercises, stamina exercises, tondues , plies, stretching for 1 and a half hour is a workout. Although is pretty painful I enjoy it but I just wanted to set the record straight and tell people the truth!
Lin is a maaaaaaniac , a maaaaaaniac on the floor and she killed us like she never killed us before..... #I think I miss Camilla!
Then we had 1 hour to work on our solos for the Christmas show on the 8th of December. I was kinda stuck with mine, I wasn`t happy with what I had and Denice gave me a good advice : TRAVEL . And oh boy I travelled my a** off! I was really annoying and I think Denice regret giving me this advice
Next thing we worked on was our musical jazz assignment. For this assignment we work boys vs girls. Up till this day us girls we had a hard time with this and boys were like “we're gonna kill you”, “ OMG WE ARE SOOOO GOOD and you have nothing “, “you're going down!” but let me tell you boys...today we were on a roll and you better not underestimate us! #you better watch out, you better not cry I am telling you why cause...you know, who run the world GIRLS! OK that made no sense but my point is … don`t underestimate us!!!
time for my beauty sleep, goodnight people Marilena

Day 53 - November 20th 2013 (By Elin Karabuda)

Day 53 - November 20th 2013   (By Elin Karabuda)

:-)  Hi humans!

Today we got visit from a supercool girl.
Toniah Pedersen!
Her level of coolness was so high that I couldn’t help getting scared.
That’s probably an instinct I have from back in the days (when dinosaurs ruled the world).
I’m cautious when people act unusually chill, cause they might attack.
That’s how they fool their victims, you know.
But I’m always one step ahead.

Oh back to Toniah!
She is huuuge in the dance world.
She has been a part of all the dance ish TV-show in Denmark.
Toniah has also worked with many artists, for example Mary J Blige, Will Smith, D´Angelo, Heavy D And The Boys :O.
Aaaaand she was Lin’s first hiphop teacher.
Pretty darn impressive…

She started off by doing some grooves with us.
It was totally different from the grooves we have learned from the other teachers.
I would explain them as I explained her. Chill. Super chill.

Here you have her folks! I didn’t find many pictures of her. So let’s really analyse the one, shall we?

Ok. She’s thinking. Yes. Yes. Good.

And here she is dancing in the D´Angelo video Brown Sugar. She´s the one with the blond hair entering in the end of the video at 3:29

Yeah, she is also in this video....cool right!?

After lunch we had a one hour and 15 min workout program.
Yup.
She extended it.
And tomorrow it will be even longer.
Hello muscles.
I feel more and more secure on the streets now ;).

Then we had a recap were we went throw the dances we will perform on the x-mas show.
My favourite is the Frank Sinatra piece!
Hahah omg it makes me so happy :-)
You WILL wanna se this! :-)

Bye humans!

Day 52 - November 19th 2013 (By Kallum Khaos)

Day 52  -  November 19th 2013 (By Kallum Khaos)

Hey guys!

So this week is supposed to be a little bit more 'chill' but it definitely doesn't feel like it.

I feel like we're working even harder than we would if we had an international choreographer - which is probably impossible because we give 110% in every class ;-)

We started the day with our continuously expanding work out program, followed by class with Lin where we worked on two pieces for a couple of performances we have coming up.

THEYRE SO GOOD =D =D

Really opposite vibes but will look amazing on stage.
I can't wait!
If you're in Skåne or the surrounding area, you should definitely be there.
There will even be guest performances by dancers and teams from other dance schools in Skåne.

Check the pre flyer here....more info will follow very soon:

After this we got into our groups and worked on our musical jazz assignment which is starting to take shape and look pretty cool.

The guys (Mantas, Anton and I) are working well together, we occasionally get distracted by comparing our muscles in the mirror, but all in all, we are getting a lot done.
Today we were working on the 'Hip Hop' section and choreographing altogether which is surprisingly conflict free.
Next we had lunch break which turned in to a little bit of a Q and A with Lin where we learned a lot about the business side of the studio, setting up the camps and her process of choosing teachers.

After another warm up/work out we had our Christmas performance solo's to choreograph.

We all put on headphones and have what looks like a bit of a silent disco in the studio, everybody dancing different choreography, in different styles to different music – we probably look crazy to anybody watching but these sessions are really productive.
We ended the day with the usual stretch, which is lead by Elin this week.

I want to end my blog by letting you guys know about 1 of 2 videos you should have watched by now.

It's of the solo's we made for Andye J's assignment, mine was posted up on the blog sometime last week, but Mantas and Anton now have theirs on Youtube for the world to see.

Check out Anton´s here:

Day 51 - November 18th 2013 (By Denice M Solberg)

Day 51 - November 18th 2013 (By Denice M Solberg)

The first day of the week and we are all so tired!
I’m going to blame the cold weather and the dark days tho..
But despite cold feet, running noses and sore bodies, life is still good!
We are preparing for two upcoming events.
This Saturday we are having a charity workshop together with other dance schools from Malmö.
We are gonna raise money for the victims of the Philippines.
The second thing is the Christmas show we are having the 8th of December.
The process is stressing and exciting at the same time!
All of us 1yep’ers are going to do a solo.
During S**t Kingz’ stay they told Lin and K that we had to practise performing alone, so now we all have to prepare and dance a solo, which is going to be fun and …scary..!

Today my b-girl skills got tested. We had three hours where we cleaned and practised K’s super hardcore breaking piece and worked on some toprocks and floorwork.
It’s very fun to dance, but my stamina needs some attention the next weeks.
Halfway in the choreo I’m already dead and bruises appear on all exsisting bodyparts.
But just wait for it, the 8th of December there is going to be 8 new b-girls and b-boys taking over the.. world(?!)

My classmate aka roommate aka partner in crime aka little brother aka Elina is in Japan at the moment.
I have nobody to get fat with now, sooo I miss her already....haha, no but really when she is gone it’s like a huge spot empty in the studio and at home.
So come back already Elinaa!!
Soo she is gone and Cecilia was sick today and Elin had to go to the doctor, so it was just Marilena, me and the boys.
For once I got to feel how it was like to be less girls then boys, it was horrrriblee.
No, it wasn’t!!!
But it’s way more fun when everybody is there!
In a week we are all back on track together!
The fantastic 8!

So by the time I get back to you guys again it’s almost December and it’s like a week left until the show.. and then its a week until the Christmas break and then we are halfway done with this program.. whaataa, time is running away from me :-(

Until next time…..
make sure you ATTEND THE CHARITY WORKSHOP ON SATURDAY to support the Philippines!!!

Where: Malmö Dans Akademi
When: 11:30 – 18:00

Day 50 - November 15th 2013 (By Anton Swerkström)

Hejsan Blog!

Wow, its already been 10 weeks...

But at the same time when Im looking back at it it seems like we have been through so much.
But on the positive side we have a whole lot of weeks ahead of us still :-)

Just like all the other days of this week we started with music theory.
I think we improved a lot this week with being able to dissect songs and hear all the different sounds in the music.
Today was the most difficult day so far though, K brought some very tricky beats.
We kinda sorta passed the test still.

Then we worked on our jazz assignments.
We have one modern and one musical that we are working on right now.
My favorite is for sure the musical one.
They paired us up boys vs girls.
I dont really know about the girls but us guys are killing it
 #nextgenbobfosse  #wrongdirection

Finished off the day with working on Lins choreo for our upcoming show.
It actually feels really good even though we only had two rehearsals now.
The song is super intense so if we can just add more emotion to our dancing I predict goosebumps from the audience.
Lots of exciting stuff coming up in the future.
We of course have our two shows and then we are also planning a charity event for next weekend.

Lin is keeping us YEP´ers busy but I dont mind though.
Rest and chilling is overrated anyways :-)

Day 49 – November 14th 2013 (By Mantas Rimeikis)

Day 49 – November 14th 2013 (By Mantas Rimeikis)

Hello Blog !
It would be nice to hear back from you since I feel like I am the only one doing the talk . We can have a conversation in comments section  ;-)   I promise to reply.   Seriously, please talk to me.

I started my day by getting up later as usual and having to rush through my morning routine. Crap.
I left the house with Kallum ( he always leaves the house late ) and got to experience his travel to the dance school , which is not cool at all.  He has to run for the first 5 minutes of his trip and then do the ‘’power-walk’’ for the rest 15-20 minutes :-)  We arrived to school pretty warmed up.
I am never leaving the house late again.

In school we had Music Theory first & K played some nice tunes for us to dissect. It was fun and educational , as always.

After that we started to plan the practical things for the X-mas Show, split the tasks of what to do and we brainstormed for a while .

Aaand after that we did our One-hour-warm up/Work Out routine, and we continued to work on our Christmas Show routine with K, which is super fun to do!  Since he has a lot of BBoy footwork in it.    I love the Jazz-splits. Since I am a huge guy it looks super cool to get down on the floor in a split-second.

And then we had some time to work on our solos !

That’s it for today,
don’t forget to text me in comments section under this blog entry , I mean it.

Mantas

Day 48 - November 13th 2013 (By Elina Yako)

Day 48 -  November 13th 2013 (By Elina Yako)

Another awesome day, started off with another awesome class of music theory with K.
Like we did in the last music theory classes, today we were about to dissected a song of choice by a student.
This day though wasn't like any other day..
Today was the day I got to chose a song MUAHAHAHAH!
Okay, i might be exaggerating but I just like evil-laughs, sorry guys.
Anyway, I picked "Sleepyhead" by Passion Pit.
Since it was a rushed last minute song-decision, I realized a little too late that the song wasn't composed as complex as I thought at first, so everyone new the musicality already after listening to the song 4-5 times.
BUMMER!
Mantas even called the song "weird" (one day you will regret that you said that).
But anyway, check out this artist guys!

After that, Lin's 1h warm-up-routine was on the schedule.
Being the perfect behaved students we are *wink*, we went through the exercises like pro's.
Sweat-soaked we moved on to the next class of the day which was the musical assignment.
Since us girls teamed up & the boys form the other group, it's not possible for both to stay in the studio & use the stereo - so we decided to switch classes.
The guys were weerrrrrking their Bob Fosse-ish step-tap-jazz-walk-thingy & us girls were working on our christmas solos (I guess eating lunch is considered working as well).

Short lunch break or sleep-time, how others like to call it.

Filled up with new energy we were all ready to get going with Lin's rehearsal for the showcase on the 13th of November.
But before we started the class, we gathered around the couch-area & Lin told us about her struggles dealing with the situation in the Philippines.
The devastating consequences of the typhoon are affecting around a million families.
We can't close our eyes when things like this are happening to other people, so Lin announced to us that she's planning on doing a dance-charity-event to donate money for the victims of the Typhoon. Of course, all of us were in!

Let´s dance to help others in need

The following class was very emotional after this talk.
The song Lin chose is a very intense song so it fit the mood perfectly.
So far, the show looks DOPE!
Stay tuned for more!

Alright. I talked a lot.
It's 1:42 in the morning.
I gotta get on a plane to Japan in 6h, I better go to bed.
Or maybe I'll watch an episode of Scrubs.
Well. Whatever.
I love you guys.
Good night!

Day 47 - November 12th 2013 (By Cecilia Tram)

Day 47 - November 12th 2013 (By Cecilia Tram)

Hello there!

Today we started to prepare for the amazing X-MAS SHOW that will take place on December 8th. Everybody is going to perform a solo.

My theme is going to be Circus. I
I am imagining this doll being control by this black, high hat and from there it´s is escalating.
If I am goig to be detailed about it+s like the hat is controlling her, so she are not able to show who she really is, and when the hat finally falls of her head she is able to be herself.

I got my music all mixed today, and I hope I will be able to create what I imagine I wanna do....because if it works, it will be awsome! :-)

We are also going to do one piece witk K and one with Lin.
Today we had K and his part is really groovy and I really like it!
It is just a piece to have fun with, and that is why I love dancing.
To not make it too complicated, and to just go for it, and play with it.
This piece is going to make the audience smile, and I super excited for Lin tomorrow.

Something that just popped into my head is.....there is this girl I have been talking to.
She really wants to apply for this education, but is afraid to do it.
She have never taken any hip hop classes or anything like that.
She is a ballerina straight through.
She have taken some Contemporary and Jazz classes, and some Showdance classes, but never Hip Hop.

I want to write about this now is because, IF you are having the same thoughts this will maybe help you.
I'm a girl with no Urban Dance background.
I have been dancing Contemporary,Jazz,Ballet,Salsa Disco,Show,Belly.......and so on...but never anything close to what we are doing at this education...and I love it.

I have been away from my dance for 2 years, and YES...I cry alot and struggle alot, only because my body are not used to it.
But you can't get this education anywhere else.
And if you want to improve or learn Urban Styles and to work with the best.
You should really apply. I'm like always on a natural high :-)
Ha ha ha and it is true :-)

You can read more about next years program, and also apply here:

Love to you all!

Day 46 - November 11th 2013 (By Marilena Maouni)

Day 46 - November 11th 2013 (By Marilena Maouni)

Today it was pretty chill, the day started with Music theory with K and we dissected Cecilia's song which was Kpop.

Even though Kpop is not my favourite thing in the world it was useful to challenge our ability to identify the instruments and sounds within an unfamiliar music genre, it also woke me up!

Next we had our typical 1 hour work out program, we know it so well now that we don't need to be guided any more.
Then we spent time working on our modern Jazz assignment which is a performance piece that demonstrates the transition from Fosse to Michael Jackson to Hip Hop.
After lunch we had Tony Tzar's evaluation...Yes we evaluate our teachers too – isn't it crazy!?!  :-)

After a pretty chill morning, K comes in and teaches us a hardcore piece of choreography that we will perform for the Christmas show on the 8th of December, and he KILLED US!
I don't know how we are going to perform this and make it look effortless.
Practice I guess.

Bye people!!

Day 45 - November 8th 2013 (By Elin Karabuda)

Day 45 - November 8th 2013 (By Elin Karabuda)

Blogeddiblogblog! :-)

Hi!

Felt like it was yesterday I was writing this blog thing.
It wasn’t though.

Have U ever woken up and thought U were a panda bear for a slip second?
I haven’t.
Please comment below if U have.
Let´s be friends.

Today was the last day with TonyWonyBoy L. I
think I speak for everyone when I say that this week just ran away like an angry baby on wheels!

As u probably heard, yesterday T-Dog surprised us with something exciting.
He made a fart. Hah no :-)
Just kidding.

A VIDEO SHOOT man! :-)  So today was the day! He started by finishing the choreo for us, made the transitions and cleaned it.
Then we all got shexy and ready to film.

I can’t reveal to much if I wanna live…
But I will say that you’re going to wanna see this s**t when it’s done.
So stay tuned my ducklings!

Tony Macaroni impressed me a lot today.
His working progress is remarkable with a capital R.
He doesn’t just make up a choreo and use some random dancers.
His work begins FROM his dancers.
So the first thing he does is just to stare at each one of us for an uncomfortably long time, while wearing headphones.
Some people freaked out and tried to escape.
But not me.
No no.
In survivor situations I set my brain into warrior mode.
That’s right, I stared back.
But he didn’t even noticed. Freaked me out even more. Crap.
Afterwards he told us that during the stare, he imagine how we would dance to the song that he’s listening to in his headphones. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how he comes up with his choreo.

One other thing about our pony Tony is that he knows A LOT. I
sometimes get tempted to cut his scalp open to see if anyone left a laptop there.

My homie Albert Einstein once said, ” Imagination is more important than knowledge."
But I bet Tony would beg to differ.
With his shitload of knowledge he can achieve more than a room full of glass-eyed smarty-pants together.
So, sorry Albie, u are lost.
I still like your hair though.

Love life. Love other stuff. Love love.
