Day 19 - September 26th 2013 (By Kallum Khaos)
Today Jenny Major was back up in the Hip Drop house to drop some knowledge bombs on the subject of Modern/Jazz.
The day started well, we were all well prepared and on the floor waiting for the lesson to start which wasn't lost on Jenny – she appreciated our enthusiasm and we all felt like we had stumbled upon a simple life-hack. I enjoyed the Modern technique, it focus's so much on energy and freedom of movement which is so essential even as a Hip Hop dancer.
There was a moment where we were all rolling around of the floor, contact improvising, lifting and travelling and really committing to something that probably looked so alien on us.
Next was the lunch break...I have a strange thing where I can't eat sometimes (like seriously – my body wont let me – it's a long story) so the second half of the day was mentally and physically exhausting.
We continued with Modern dance history and then moved on to Modern Jazz which is difficult enough even after a good meal.
Jazz is new to me, and Jenny's advanced Jazz warm ups force you to either keep up or get left behind so I was trying my best to focus and not get frustrated with my body as it failed at executing the various technical sequences.
After this we worked on a choreography piece which was really nice even though I wanted to collapse. The class did so well (myself not included haha) even though only a few of the group have prior Jazz experience – it's inspiring to dance beside them everyday and I think it's so noticeable that every member of the group feels the same.
Jazz with Jenny Major from Sceneindgangen in Copenhagen/Denmark.
Next came our group assignment and like every shared project, problems arise, which isn't necessary a bad thing; it's natural.
What is important is how we deal with the problems and move on – truth be told that stage is still a work in progress but I think we're functioning really well to say we've not known each other for a month yet and spend 90% of our waking day together.
Tomorrow is the shoot day and we're almost prepared, just a few bits and pieces to pull together.
Oh, and we have to edit the music still...it will be fine =)
Don't forget to look out for it on Youtube in the coming weeks.
Until next time folks.
*I got rid of my catch phrase because Mantas made fun of me!* =P
